Bitter is the New Black...

I just read a great book that I wanted to share with you all. The title is great! It's called "Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass,Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office."

The title totally drew me to the book but the writing and story line kept me interested and laughing out loud. The book is by Jen Lancaster and it is the story of her journey through unemployment. She went from making six figures to asking her parents to help her buy her groceries.

Jen was discovered as a writer through her blog! I love her writing style...I just love her. Her blog, jennsylvania is now one my favorites.

She has two other books out (the titles are great too!), "Such a Pretty Fat: One Narcissist's Quest To Discover if Her Life Makes Her Ass LookBig, Or Why Pie is Not The Answer" and "Bright Lights, Big Ass: A Self-Indulgent, Surly, Ex-Sorority Girl's Guide to Why it Often Sucks in the City, or Who are These Idiots and Why Do They All Live Next Door to Me?"

Jen's books are great, easy read that will definitely give you a well needed laugh!

Happy Six Month Birthday Cami!

To my dearest, most precious Cami,

I can't believe that you are six months old! Where has the time gone? It feels like only yesterday that the doctor announced "It's a Camryn" and we all celebrated your arrival. You have been such a dream baby so far. You are so easy going and relaxed, just like your Daddy. You have come so far in just six months. You can now sit up and sleep through the night...We are very excited about that last one! You are eating solid food like a champ. There isn't a veggie or fruit that you haven't found absolutely delicious. Your brother adores you and tell me constantly "Cami so cute." You have been a joy these last six months and we can't wait to see all that you can do when you turn one! It will be hear in the blink of an eye.

With all the love in the world (and kisses too!),

Mommy

Here you are at just a couple days old:

Now look at you!

Florida Vacation Parts 5 and 6

Florida Vacation Part 5: Hurricane Fay...you suck!

At the beginning of the week we heard some rumblings of a hurricane hitting Florida but we did pay much attention, my dad said we would just be rained out one day. As the storm hit Florida, the meteorologists predicted that it would hit just south of us after it swung back over the ocean. Dad thought we might want to back up and leave on Wednesday night since no electricity may not be that fun with two kiddos, but truthfully I wanted to brave it out because I just wasn't ready for the trip back yet! The thought of now power and hurricane winds was much more appealing than the thought of driving back up north with the kiddos.

The hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm and we decided to stay for the duration that we originally intended. It rained for the last three days we were in Florida but we didn't mind since we were playing our new wii! Ben has been looking into the wii for some time now and the thought of being stuck indoors for three days meant a wii purchase. We played tennis and boxing and we had the sore muscles to show for it. I wonder if doctor's have seen an increase in patients due to wii injuries because it really works your arm muscles!

We survived Tropical Storm Fay. As much as it stunk to be rained out at the beach, I actually didn't mind it because it gave us a great excuse to do nothing but veg around the house. The rain stopped just in time for Ben to pack the car and for us to make our way home on Friday night.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Vacation Part 6: This is the ride that never ends!

We decided to change it around a bit for the ride home and we left at bed time and hoped the kiddos would sleep as we drove through the night...boy were wrong again!!!

We left at 7:30, which is Cami's usual bedtime. She decided it would be more fun to play with the straps of her car seat and her feet for the next two hours and she was still awake at 9:30! At this point, she was so overtired that she couldn't fall asleep and she cried and cried and screamed and cried some more. Brayden had fallen asleep around 9 so he also woke up due to her incessant crying. We pulled over multiple times to let her out of her car seat and try to calm her down. As soon as she was out of the car seat, she was happy as a clam but the second her body hit her seat again, the crying and screaming ensued. By about 1:00 am, we had had enough and decided that we needed to stop at a hotel and let her sleep for a couple of hours. Everyone got some rest except me because Cami felt the need to sleep on top of me, which is not particularly comfortable considering I am a belly sleeper and she weighs over 16 pounds!

We headed off the next morning around 6:30 am, stopped for breakfast around 8 and we hoped to be home by 1:30...boy were we wrong again! We were making great time, the kiddos were somewhat happy but it all came to an end when we hit major traffic between D.C. and Baltimore. We tried all the alternate routes that the Garmin gave us but everywhere we went there was traffic...and apparently Cami hates traffic as do her father and I but we don't scream and cry about it.

I would have to say that Cami cried for the last three hours of the trip, which made each minute seem like an eternity! We finally got home around 3:30 pm...so about 14 hours of drive time with a 5 hour rest stop, better but still not great. I have never been so happy to be home. Cami went down for a major nap and Brayden ran into the house and screamed "I am gonna play all my toys!" I unpacked and then had a glass (or two) of wine to relax...it was fabulous and much needed after our crazy Florida vacation.

Florida Vacation Part 4: What kind of bugs live down here?...A trip (or two) to the local health clinic.

Apparently Brayden has a problem with the biting bugs in Florida. He got bit at some point when we got here but I didn't notice the bites until his whole ankle swelled and he had a huge red rash the size of a baseball around the bite. I noticed it in the morning and by the afternoon, it had grown bigger.

Ben and I put Brayden down for a nap and we went out to go to the Internet cafe (I have become so used to wireless Internet service that I almost can't live without it!) and on the way there, I called our pediatrician. I had Ben talk to the nurse on the phone because I am really bad at explaining things and estimations (I knew they would ask about the approximate size and I would have said cantaloupe-sized...I have a slight problem with exaggeration!)

Anyways, the nurse tells Ben that we can watch it and if it starts to bubble up and ooze then we should take him to the ER or a clinic to it checked out and Ben says "well, I guess we will be heading off to the ER or the clinic because it has already bubbled up and burst." I am freaking out because I just want to be home with my regular doctor and clinics just seem like places that I don't want to be...especially on vacation.

The first clinic I call doesn't open until 5 and it is for uninsured men and women who are unemployed...not us. I try another clinic that will take our insurance so we head over after nap. It was really nice, hardly any wait and we walked out of there with a diagnosis of cellulitis and a prescription for a topical steroid cream and an oral antibiotic.

After dinner, we pick up the prescriptions and head home to administer the treatment. I must first warn you that Brayden is not a good patient...he is the worst patient known to mankind! He hates medicine passionately. We two-team him and I am administer the antibiotic while Ben holds him down. We try to avoid the antibiotic he spits out and actually get him to swallow most of it. He is very upset so he gets a hug from Daddy and then...puke every where (On a side note, did you know that raisins take like forever to digest because 6 hours after he ate them, they were still in his stomach...weird) and especially on Daddy. Thank god it wasn't Mommy that got puked on because then we would have had a double mess to clean up! Also, thank god for leather couches...must invest in some when I win the lottery.

I call the on-call nurse at our pediatrician to see if we should give him more antibiotic or not...overdosing your kid is bad apparently. She says that we have to get it in him and if he pukes it up again, then we will have to call the prescribing doctor for an alternative...OK because it is already about 9 at night.

We try the old Medicine-Milk-Sippy combo but he takes one drink and he knows. He throws his sippy and screams "It taste like Medicine!" Crap...so we try the candy approach, which we have none of so we pick through some trail mix and get out all the peanut butter chips and m&m's. He gets a little medicine at a time and then some candy. We do this for 10 minutes and after the last bit of medicine. He freaks out and Ben takes him outside. I come out to see if he is ok and Ben is once again covered in puke...that's twice in less than an hour, folks!

I try to call the clinic doctor but surprise, surprise I have no way to reach him. So I call the nurse back and she assess the situation to see if we can wait until morning or if we need to take him to an ER. Morning it is so we are off to bed...with Brayden in our bed of course because the nurse scares the crap out of me with all the instructions of go immediately to the ER if this happens or that develops.

It's now Thursday and Hurricane Fay, which is only Tropical Storm Fay to us, has reached us. I call the clinic at 8 to see if they are open so we could race in. The clinic is off the island and we are staying on the island and if the wind gets bad enough, they close the bridge and we would be stranded.

It seems to take forever to call us back and there really isn't anyone there...maybe I am a bit panicky about the whole possibility of the bridge closing. We see the same doctor and I tell him Brayden needs the antibiotic shot, which he has had before, because the pain of a needle is nothing to the hour of pain he goes through when he screams and cries and eventually throws up. He agrees and we get the shot.

As the doctor walks out, I say "Should we follow up with our pediatrician when we get home in 2 days?" He says "That sounds like a good idea." Oh does it. I would think that to CYA every clinic and ER doc would say as they were walking out the door, "Please follow up with your regular doctor." I guess that just me and my whacking everybody sues everybody thinking. As you can see, the doctor was a bit of a doofus. Ben says "They should give our copay to you since you basically told the doctor what to do." Oh Ben, it's called being a mom...a bossy, know-it-all one at that!

We are out of the clinic no problem...well except for the minor hold up of paying our bill because some deranged women was screaming in another language at the office staff but she eventually left and so did we. We made it back over the bridge, thank god!

Brayden is now fully healed but don't think for a second that the next time we go down to Florida that I won't bathe him in massive amounts of DEET! A bug bite that results in that much chaos is not going to happen to me again.

Wordless Wednesday: The newest member of KISS

She has found her tongue!!!

Florida Vacation Part 3: Here comes the sun...do, da, do, da. (Ya know like the Beetles song!)

So the sun finally came out on Monday and Tuesday. Whohoo!!!

Brayden was still scared of the ocean, which was pretty rough considering a hurricane was brewing, but he loved the pool. He liked jumping into to Daddy and walking down the pool steps, although this made Mommy very nervous and she had to have an extra glass(es) of wine that night.

Cami was not much of a beach babe but she loved being in her floaty in the pool. She is such a people watcher, just like her Mommy. There were two other families from Georgia (love the accent and especially cute for little southern girls!) and Cami couldn't peel her eyes away. If she is going to continue people watching (or spying as Ben's likes to say...what does he know!), we are going to have to teach her to be a bit more conspicuous or she might get beat up. Right now, she is all for the obvious and she's so darn cute, nobody seems to care!

We had a great time at the beach and pool and we have the pics to show for it! I made a slide show of our sunny day vacation pics, so check it out below. I also posted some of my favorites for those of you who a. don't have enough time to view my 40 page slide show and b. don't care, although that kind of makes me wonder why you are here in the first place.

Florida Vacation Part 2: The brother and his girlfriend...how to completely bore cool, hip twenty somethings.

So we made it to Florida and we didn't leave anyone on the side of the road...quite a true testament to our ability to keep it all together in trying times if you have been following our crazy vacation recap.

My brother, Chip and his girlfriend, Katie flew down to Florida on Thursday night and they had quite a bit of travel nightmares themselves! My brother was stuck on the tarmac for 3 hours before the flight finally took off...just think how much more that would have sucked if Ben had had his way and we flew down instead.

My parents drove down to Florida and arrived on Friday afternoon. They had the best journey of us all but I guess I can forgive them since they used to make the drive with my brother and I and we each got to bring a friend...and we were all tweens and annoying and hormonal so they have definitely had their fair share of crappy, long road trips.

Saturday was quite overcast but we headed out to the beach hoping the sun would burn off the clouds...never happened but we still had fun. Brayden got his first taste of the beach life and he was quite apprehensive. He was scared of the ocean and didn't like the sand but Daddy started to build some sandcastles and he warmed right up when he realized he could be destructive and not get in trouble. He loved for Daddy to make a castle and he knocked it down with either his hands or stepping on it like King Kong!

Cami never made it out to the beach since by the time she got up from her morning nap, it was time for lunch and we had all headed back to the condo for lunch. I know what you are thinking and NO, we didn't leave Cami in the condo by herself (We may be the bad parents who let their infant watch DVD's but we aren't that bad people!!!). My wonderful mother doesn't take well to the sun so she stayed back and sat on the lanai (that's porch for those of you not from the Florida area) and read her book.

After the lunch, the kids napped and we (Chipper, Katie, Ben and I) played cards while it drizzled on and off. We also drank my Dad's fabulous margaritas...yummy and quite needed after the trip down.

We went out to dinner that night and then my mother informed us that she would put the kiddos to bed and that us youngin's could go out on the town...so we tried but Ben and I just can't hang anymore. We didn't leave to go out until after 9:30, which on a normal night would be just about the time I am changing into my jammies and heading off to my bed. We went to one bar and had one drink and we all decided that it would be more fun to head home and playing card games.

We played all sorts of games, some of which I hadn't played since college. After drinking a little too much and laughing a whole lot, we headed off to bed at 1 am. Yes, you read that right and yes, we realized the err in our ways when both Cami and Brayden wanted to get up before 7 the next morning...Ouch!

It was all worth it though and we had a great time spending with my brother and getting to know Katie better. Sorry we are such lame-o's and could show you are grand ole time. I know you are both used to the bright lights and late nights of the city but we are just sorry suburbanites with two kids and early bedtimes...hope you had just a little fun too!

The sunny part of our vacation began as Katie and Chip headed off to the airport on Sunday but don't worry, it didn't last long...the bi-otch Fay decided to come for an unwelcomed visit!

Florida Vacation Part 1: 17 hours of h-e-double hockey sticks on wheels!!!

As I sit here with both kids napping, I thought I might start my vacation recaps as promised but there is a problem...Part 1 or 17 hours of h-e-double hockey sticks on wheels was so bad that I believe I have erased it from memory almost completely. It's kind of like pregnancy and labor...you forget all the bad parts, how much it sucked, how much it hurt so that you can do it again. So I will try to piece together what happened for you but keep in mind, it was way worse than it sounds...my memory was completely wiped so that I could prepare for the journey back, also quite horrible...but that I remember!

We packed the car the night before and headed to bed around midnight...stupid Olympics where all the good stuff doesn't come on until after 10:30 and I know you will say, "hello, DVR much???" but we were leaving and I just couldn't wait ten days to watch the gymnastics and swimming. The kiddos slept in until 7 and we headed off on our journey around 8:30 a.m. Before kiddos, it took us about 12 hours to drive down to the condo in Florida and that included lunch and gas stops so we were thinking that it would take about 14 hours since we would have to let the kiddos stretch their legs and burn off energy...Boy were we wrong!

Cami started to freak out about an hour into the trip and continued to do so for the rest of the time! She cried hysterically for about an hour, which forced us to pull over about 2 hours into the trip somewhere between Baltimore and Washington. Once out of the car seat, she was a doll but when you put her back in...well lets just say ear plugs probably wouldn't be able to drown her screams of fury! So we hooked up the DVD player to the back of her seat and she happily watched Baby Einstein. (Yes, we are those parents...the ones who let their 6 month old watch T.V. just so they can drive in peace and quiet!)

All of a sudden 10 minutes later, we hear crazy screaming coming from the back seat...Did a bird fly in through the window and attach my baby? No, Cami's DVD player has stopped working. Why, God, Why??? We stop at the nearest rest stop to evaluate and figure out that the plug thingy won't stay in the cigarette lighter so Ben rigs up some luggage and we are back in the Cami Cry-Free Zone. She falls asleep to Baby Einstein but do we dare turn it off...No way!

We stop for lunch at Friendly's...YUMMY! Both kiddos are happy and so is Mommy because I get a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Sundae and it is so good. Please keep in mind that I have been on weight watchers for about 3 months so my body hasn't had this type of yummy food in awhile and after about hour, it is pissed! Many, many emergency stops at the bathroom later and we are finally making some time! And ladies out there if you can believe this, on my final trip to the bathroom who shows up but my Aunt Flo (weird to right that but I didn't know what else to call it) and she was not invited on this family vacation! What did I do to deserve such punishment? I will definitely be steering clear of Friendly's in the future.

Both kiddos are somewhat happy after lunch and the one million bathroom stops for me and diaper changes so we stop for dinner at a Cracker Barrel. We pull Brayden out of the car and he is soaking wet...CRAP! He peed through his diaper and his car seat is soaked. What are supposed to do??? We are in North Carolina and still have many hours ahead of us so we try to sop up the pee with a burp cloth and have Brayden ride the rest of the way on one of Ben's shirts. No complaints from Brayden as long as Thomas is on.

It's now 9 and neither kiddo wants to sleep but both are dreadfully tired...which we all know means very loud crying and whining. Yuck! They finally fall asleep but Brayden only sleeps for about an hour and then he is us up until we reach our final destination at 1:30 am! Yes, we left at 8:30 am and arrived the next day at 1:30 am...17 hours! Lots of crying and whining and peeing and pooping and everything else that could go wrong did! But we made it and I am so happy and so excited to go to sleep.

My brother and his girlfriend are down so Brayden was supposed to sleep in my parents room since our room is on the small side and Cami was already sleeping in the closest...don't worry, it was a walk-in! Brayden wanted to no part of sleeping in the pack 'n play and he didn't want to sleep in bed with Mum and Papa either...he wanted Daddy so into bed with us he came. After a 17 hour ride from the inner depths of hell, I get to sleep with my husband and toddler son in a double (yes, D-O-U-B-L-E) bed. Thank god Cami slept like an angel because I didn't since Brayden decided he wanted to snuggle up to Daddy and sleep in the pike position. I had feet in my ribs and kidneys all night long...I woke up and thought I was still pregnant with Cami! We got about 5 hours of sleep and then rolled out of bed to the beach to hang with the fam...more to come later!

Oh wait, I just remembered that it rained hard for about an hour or two of the trip so that cost us some time since we had to slow way down. So in total we had to deal with crying, whining, DVD problems, bottles, diaper changes, wet seats, lots of bathroom stops and weather...what a trip!

We're Back!!!

We just got home today from our vacation in Florida. I have so many stories to share. As I was finally taking my shower for the day (at 6:38 p.m.), I figured out that there are six parts to our crazy, crazy vacay. I will have to post them a couple at a time so I can keep up with my regular duties as super wife and super mom!

Here is a sneak peak and let me just say that we drove to Florida with the kiddos (and yes, we always knew we were crazy but after this trip we are now certifiable and headed straight to the loony bin!) so you can just guess what part 1 and 6 will be about!

Part 1: 17 hours of h-e-double hockey sticks on wheels!!!
Part 2: The brother and his girlfriend...how to completely bore cool, hip twenty somethings.
Part 3: Here comes the sun...do, da, do, da. (Ya know like the Beetles song!)
Part 4: What kind of bugs live down here and why do they continue to bite my helpless little man...A trip (or two) to the local health clinic.
Part 5: Hurricane Fay...you suck!
Part 6: This is the ride that never ends!

Stay tuned for some awesome (and horrible too!) stories and pics...

Wordless Wednesday - What's that on her face?

Excuse me miss, but I think you have something on your face.

No, it is not poop. Although I know that's what you were thinking from the title. We went out with friends for lunch and Cami was being a great sport, even though she was dead tired from her very short morning nap. Ben was letting her "play" or more like eat Brayden's car menu that he had adorned with many stickers. I guess Cami thought it would be cool to adorn herself with stickers too! We didn't even notice the sticker until our friend pointed it out. I guess we were preoccupied with the craziness of lunch with four adults, two toddlers and two babies!

National Spelling Bee...Here we come!

Brayden ran up to me this morning and spelled his name. I was shocked...I gave birth to a genius! Isn't that what every mom thinks. Brayden loves the alphabet and we are constantly writing his name for him on his doodle-pro. I guess he has learned from all the repetition. He is just too cute for words sometimes.

What wrong with my feet?

Brayden had his first splinter on Friday evening and it is totally my fault. I had been pretty good about making Brayden wear shoes on the deck in the beginning of the summer but I got lax and Brayden's darling little tootsies fell victim to the wooden deck!

We had been out on the deck after nap having our new favorite snack, frozen go-gourt. We came in and Brayden was playing trains at the kitchen table while I cleaned...I mean, surfed the net. He called to me "Mommy, what wrong with my feet?" and I simple thought they had fallen asleep since they were dangling over the chair so I told him to sit Indian style. Problem solved...not quite. He came limping over and said in the saddest voice, "Mommy, what wrong with my feet?" So I investigated and found a gigantic splinter. Yikes...called hubby and he told me to take it out...duh! Did I ever mention I am not good in emergency situations and although this situation wasn't that emergent, I still need some support and coaxing to push me into the direction I didn't want to go because I knew this direction would involve lots of screaming and crying and one sleeping Cami that wouldn't be sleeping for much longer.

So I take the hurt foot and start the operation promising my patient candy, cookies, cake and ice cream...all his favorites! I get the splinter out and of course, it breaks and the part that is left is pretty deep. I decide to wait for my back up doctor to come home and Brayden says through little sobs "I want my special candy." Oh crap! I have no candy. I threw out all candy earlier in the week since I was eating it and I needed it out of the house. I also have no cookies, cake or ice cream...all empty promises that any mom would say to make her little man feel better in times of serious pain. So I convince him that yo-gos are candy since they kind of look like it anyway and all is good in the world.

Ben gets home and Brayden goes back into the operating room. Since Ben is the better, more skilled surgeon, he performs the surgery and call the shots. One quick call to the neighbors produces four lollipops so we are ready to start the procedure. A ten minute foot soak in Cami's European baby spa tub, sterilization of operating tools (tweezers and needle) and finally we got the splinter out with lots of very loud screaming and crying. Two lollipops and one Diego band-aid later, Brayden is fully recovered.

Moral of this story, shoes are necessary at all times outside. It is far less painful to put on shoes then to dig splinters out of your poor little child's precious little feet. Bad mommy moment of the week behind me!

Yogurt Popsicles...what a treat!

Brayden actually ate yogurt this afternoon! I am still in shock. Dawn shared with me this wonderful way to trick your kiddos into eating a healthy snack.
You simply buy Go-Gurt and then throw it in the freezer...voila, healthy snack that your kiddos think is a treat. Brayden thought he was getting an ice pop, which he is usually only allowed to have after dinner but today he got a Go-gurt popsicle for snack after nap and he thought that was pretty darn cool. Little does he know, he actually ate something healthy and good for him.

Brayden was happy eating his popsicle and mommy was really happy because her super cute little man is the world's pickiest eater and she actually found something that is healthy that he likes!

Thanks Dawn!

Summer Fun Photo Contest

5 Minutes for Mom is holding a summer fun photo contest and I have decided to enter and possibly win $500! This contest is for everyone (Bloggers and Blog Readers!) so if you want more info, click here.

I love this photo of Brayden and my hubby...although soon after it was snapped, I kindly requested that hubby no longer throw my little man so high in the air. I used to love when my dad used to throw us around my grandparents pool and I love the big smile I see on my son's face when his daddy tosses him "high to the sky", as Brayden would say.

Wordless Wednesday - Mission Impossible

Why is it so hard to get both kiddos to smile at the same time???

Big Decision...Put on hold!

So I guess you have been wondering where I have been this past week and the answer is not simple and still quite confusing to me but I now see the light!

Over the past week, we have been looking at houses, meeting with our mortgage broker, fixing up some little stuff at our house and talking A LOT! And did I mention stay awake at night worrying...well, that was just me, not us! We have come to the decision that we are not going to sell yet and that we are going to stay put for now. After looking at houses and prices, we have decided that right now we can not comfortably afford to get what we want in a house and a yard. We could swing it but I mean we would be destitute and that's just not fair to the kiddos. I want them to be able to take music class and go to preschool and I want us to be able to spend when we what to spend and go on vacation. So it looks like we are staying where we are for at least a year or two...and ya know what, I feel really good about that decision and I am sleeping better too!

A Big Decision

We have been so busy over the past couple of days. Where do I even begin???

Brayden never really got sick. He had his one massive puke but nothing after that and just a kind of whiny, stay in his pj's kind of day. I am so glad it wasn't another stomach bug...that is just no fun, especially the whole passing it to everyone we know thing. Sucks for us and sucks for everyone who knows us!

Over the past couple days, we have decided that we will most likely (95% sure) put the house on the market...YIKES! I know that it is not a seller's market right now but it is definitely a buyer's market and we could really get into a great house right now. We feel like if we miss this opportunity that we may never get as much of a house for this great a price so we are throwing ourselves out there and we will see if it really happens. We are not daring enough to buy first and worry about selling later. We will put the house up and if someone puts in an offer than we will see if there is anything out there that we want.

It just feels like such a big step and it also makes me kind of sad. I mean, Ben and I bought this house about a month before we got married. I feel like we grew up in this house and we definitely grew our family here! It would make me sad to leave the kiddos rooms behind but I know that it would be great to have more of a yard and more of a house. We will see what happens.

We have been working on touching up the little things in the house that will make it look better to potential buyers. We painted the shutters and front porch this weekend and will be getting the carpets cleaned next week. If you have any other advice for us, please share your wisdom. When we bought our house, we did have anything to sell so this is uncharted territory for us...and if you know me, you know that I hate the unknown!
